You are called to see
a patient in the short stay ward of the casualty unit
The patient was a
homeless alcoholic who had been brought in by the police having been found
lying in the street the previous day. No proper history had been obtained from
the patient.
The patient had
become fully conscious by evening and had been able to eat and drink normally
In the morning the
patient had become confused and agitated
On examination you
find the patient is confused, he has bilateral 6th nerve palsy and
nystagmus and he has an ataxic gait.
