A 67
year old male presents with a history of palpitations of 2 weeks duration. He
is a known hypertensive controlled on a thiazide diuretic. He did not smoke
but consumed 20 units of alcohol per week.
On
examination he did not look distressed , pulse 100 beats per minute irregular
in rhythm and volume , BP 130/80 JVP was not raised , heart rate 130 beats per
minute irregularly irregular , no murmurs , lungs were clear , abdominal
examination was unremarkable.
ECG
confirmed atrial fibrillation.
The
patient was commenced on warfarin and amiodarone and 4 weeks later was
admitted for elective cardioversion which was successful.
Your
house officer asks you for how long his warfarin should continue and you
